Opeth “Sorceress” on it’s way soon.

Swedish progressive legends, OPETH have signed a deal with Nuclear Blast and have a new album ready for release later this year. Always an unstoppable force for uniqueness amid a sea of generic swill, OPETH have been setting the rulebook ablaze, and ploughing a uniquely progressive and exploratory furrow for over 25 years now. Neither conforming nor exhibiting any desire to be restricted to a single genre, OPETH, quite simply, have a time honored tradition of blowing our minds with both class and forward thinking. All these years later, nothing and everything has changed once again with their forthcoming album »Sorceress«.

“We’re happy to confirm that we have indeed signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment and will be putting out our 12th studio album »Sorceress« via our own imprint, Moderbolaget Records,” states Mikael Åkerfeldt. “The decision was made in Markus Staiger’s (Nuclear Blast kingpin) ridiculously potent Porsche going at 150 mph somewhere in the south of Germany. We’re happy to be part of the NB team and look forward to a fruitful relationship.”

Nuclear Blast owner, Markus Staiger, continues:
“I am honored that OPETH have joined the Nuclear Blast family. Mikael Åkerfeldt and his fellow bandmates have demonstrated time and time again that OPETH are a band that never release an album that sounds the same. You never know what their new music will sound like! Nuclear Blast has been following the musical journey of OPETH from the beginning with »Orchid« to landmark albums like »Still Life«, »Deliverance«, »Damnation« and »Blackwater Park«, right up to 2014’s »Pale Communion«! The band have become one of the most challenging artists in rock music today. It is not often that we get to work with musicians of their caliber and I’m thrilled to have such a unique genre-leader on the label. The future for OPETH and Nuclear Blast looks very bright.”

Monte Conner, Nuclear Blast Entertainment president adds:
“OPETH are a band that have continually evolved and moved forward at every stage. Always innovating and always continuing to challenge themselves as players and writers. They are simply fearless. I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next! It’s an amazing feeling to be reunited with one of my favorite bands and I look forward to my colleagues here at Nuclear Blast being able to have their own OPETH experience and role in the band’s continuing journey. I want to thank Mikael Åkerfeldt and OPETH for putting their faith and trust in everyone here at Nuclear Blast.”

OPETH are currently in the studio with Tom Dalgety putting the finishing touches on »Sorceress«. A release for the album is tentatively scheduled for the spring via Moderbolaget RecordsNuclear Blast Entertainment.

Paradise Lost find new home

unnamed (1)

Iconic UK metallers, PARADISE LOST, have signed a worldwide deal with German-based metal powerhouse Nuclear Blast! Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1988 and still boasting 4 of its 5 original members, the band are widely-credited with co-founding the gothic metal genre with their sophomore album, »Gothic« (1991). Through the years, PARADISE LOST have changed their style effectively and reinvented themselves again and again. They elbowed their way from their original melodic death metal on their debut, »Lost Paradise« (1990) to the classic »Icon« (1993) and more experimental »One Second« (1997). Finally they went back to the roots with their current release, »The Plague Within« (2015) and some of the best reviews of their career.

Vocalist Nick Holmes commented:
“PARADISE LOST’s career has run alongside Nuclear Blast Records since the label began in the late 80’s. And as huge fans of original death metal, we still have the majority of the label’s first releases from those very early days. It’s pretty incredible to see how the label has become a real force in metal music over the years, both in Europe and America and now, nearly 30 years later, in a new chapter for the band, it’s exciting for PARADISE LOST to be a part of Nuclear Blast in 2017!”

Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger adds:
“As a fan from day one I’ve been following PARADISE LOST ever since their death metal era but also enjoyed watching them grow into something even bigger and so unique. They defined and later on re-defined the gothic genre and always delivered the most dark and memorable songs. It’s with great pleasure to finally welcome the band to the ever-growing Nuclear Blast family! Needless to say that we’re very much looking forward to this cooperation!”

Metallica producer Greg Fidelman – the right man for the job?

Metallica producer Greg Fidelman – the right man for the job?

Kirk Hammett let it slip in a recent interview that Greg Fidelman will produce the follow up to 2008’s Death Magnetic.

Up until this point it’d been assumed that so far into the writing and demoing process the band would self-produce with an engineer … and that’s kind of what’s happening.

You see Fidelman and Metallica have history, he worked as engineer on Death Magnetic under the “guidance” of Rick Rubin, he produced, engineered and mixed the band’s contribution to the Ronnie James Dio tribute record and the “Through The Never” soundtrack and co-produced and mixed Lulu – so these guys know and trust one another.

The question for a lot of fans will be can he be trusted with a new original record? The answer, I think, is definitively yes.

Fidelman has a rock/metal background and played guitar in AC/DC sound alike Rhino Bucket through til the mid 90’s before embarking on his current career path. He cut his teeth as an engineer working on albums by Marilyn Manson (Holy Wood), System of a Down (self-titled), Slipknot (Subliminal Verses) and Red Hot Chili Peppers (Californication) amongst others before taking the plunge and producing American Head Charge’s 2004 album The Feeding.

His producing career from there has been on the up and up and he’s garnered some pretty heavyweight fans along the way. Notoriously hard to please Slayer guitarist/songwriter Kerry King said on working with Fidelman on “World Painted Blood” – “Greg is great at what he does, and he’s there more to help us make sure we explore all of the possibilities. He’ll see that all of our ideas get tried out for the songs. Greg sometimes is like the fifth member of Slayer when it comes to that. He also has great ideas, like on [the song] ‘Americon’. He had an idea to throw in an octave in one section, and it really filled out the track. That’s why it’s good to have an extra person in there we trust.”

When I interviewed King’s then bandmate, Dave Lombardo on the World Painted Blood tour he was equally effusive about working with Fidelman saying “he really stepped up, did an amazing job and captured the band for what it was … he would show up at rehearsal’s and record us and demo the songs up, he really worked hard and you can tell ‘cause he captured our sound in its raw form”.

Greg Fidelman sounds like exactly what Metallica need, a hands on producer willing to get his hands dirty and ask difficult questions when they need to be asked and he has fresh ears, which will be important to make sure that Lars snare sounds right this time around.

Alestorm talk bandana’s on cats and longevity ahead of Piratefest!

Alestorm – you guys have been at this a while now – when you’re writing do you feel restricted with what you can deliver considering your genre?

Absolutely not. We have enough material in our ridiculous brains to be able to write exactly 72.3 more albums. Have you ever heard a song about a future war between pirates and Mormons? I thought not…

Your last album Sunset on a Golden Age – is the title a hint at a swansong? Or is a new album already in the pipeline?

It’s actually worrying how many people think that. If I thought for a second that people would misinterpret the title so much then we probably would have gone with something completely different. But no, we’re not smart enough for cryptic messages. There’s a lot more albums after this!

How much Pirate study do you do – any Masters Degrees in Pirate history aboard?

None really. Wikipedia is great for some stuff, the rest is made up! Anyone doing a Masters degree in pirate history has no friends.

Bandana’s are an accepted part of the pirate wardrobe and plenty or rock/metal guys don them too – who wears theirs better – Vinnie Paul or Brett Michaels?

I love it when people put bandanas on their cats and dogs. Cracks me up every time.

Any truth to the rumour that your planning a concept album based on William Wallace’s little known naval division?

It must be little known, and we don’t even know of it. So it’s extremely unlikely. I preferred it back in the olden days when people spread rumours about band members eating live animals on stage or sleeping with thousands of women. What’s happened?

Pirates of the Caribbean movies – pish or on the money? What is the best pirate movie?

Ah they aren’t bad. One of them was ludicrously boring though, possibly 2 or 3? Best pirate movie is Star Wars.

How many “Ales” constitute a storm?

Finally a quick fire five question I ask every interviewee.

1 – 1st record you heard that made you go “fuck I wanna do that!”

Was actually Acker Bilk’s Stranger on the Shore.. I’m not even kidding, I rocked the clarinet when I was younger.

2 – What’s your poison?

I go through phases. I like all booze really.. Currently drinking a bottle of Kasteel Rouge. It’s yummy.

3 – Worst/most disgusting habit of someone you’ve toured with?

Some think it’s a good idea to not wash for weeks on end, and some like to pump their way through 4 girls in one night. But I’m not mentioning any names.

4 – Strange fan request/fan interaction?

We recently got a serious email from a ‘professional mermaid’ asking if we wanted to do a photoshoot with her, complete with a photo of herself in complete mermaid mode paddling around in the Firth of Forth.

5 – If a kid asked you what metal was and you could only give him/her one record what would it be and why?

Probably ‘WASP – The Crimson Idol’ depends if he/she was a prick or not.

Adler to guest on Megadave album

The rumours have been gathering momentum but we can now confirm that Lamb of God‘s Chris Adler will be behind the kit when Megadeth enter the studio to record their next album.
The news that surprises us though is that Megadeth will enter the studio as a three-piece, with Mustaine playing all the guitar parts, so it seems Angra’s Kiko Loureiro, who had also been rumored to be part of the recording, isn’t in the frame for the studio work. I guess the question now is – who will be in the band on the road?

Dave Mustaine quoted as saying “Chris is a tremendous talent, and an amazing person. He is going to bring a new level of excitement and energy to Megadeth that the fans are going to lose their minds over. I have nothing but respect for my previous drummers, but this is going to absolutely KILL! Back in 1989, Megadeth originally worked as a three piece — guitar, bass and drums — when we laid down the framework to our Grammy-nominated platinum album Rust in Peace. I want to thank the other members of Lamb Of God for allowing this opportunity to take place for all of us in the metal community.”
Bassist and partner in crime David Junior Ellefson added, “Chris has been an endearing friend to us in Megadeth for many years now, and he truly appreciates our music and its legacy. His drumming has forged such an innovative and ferocious path for metal music and I’m very proud that he is anchoring our rhythm section with us on this new album. I can clearly see a new dawn of ‘utmost heaviness’ unfolding in Megadeth’s next chapter.”

As for the Lamb of God skins man himself? Here what he had to say on this all being made official, “Megadeth was the game changer for me. Growing up, there was no other band that meant as much to my musical interest and direction. There is no doubt I would not be doing what I have been doing for the past three decades had I not stumbled across Killing Is My Business and the bible of all metal, Peace Sells, in my formative years.”
“About 10 years ago, Lamb of God toured with Megadeth and I was able to share that story with Dave and David, and we have kept in touch ever since,” he added. “When Dave called me a while ago and asked if I was interested in making a thrash metal album with him, I felt like I must’ve been on a hidden camera show. I was trying to play it cool, but I was speechless other than ‘YES!’ Once I called my wife and my band guys to let everyone know, I had some time to really think about it and how I can best fit into this situation. I’m coming into this on fire. There is an incredible amount of respect, but the goal here is to make the very best thrash album we can. Together, I believe we can do something very special! Get ready for a very exciting chapter in the Megadeth legacy.”

Anthrax GoTAnthrax have added a song to the Catch the Throne Mix Tape II, a compilation based on the hit TV show Game of Thrones that will be released on Soundcloud tomorrow.

Killswitch Engage and Mastodon are other metal acts confirmed to have contributed.

Here’s a snapshot of the Anthrax track.

Devilskin band imageDevilskin New Zealand’s most explosive rock band are continuing their exponential success in 2015.

Devilskin’s debut album We Rise is now certified Platinum. They are the first ‘new artist’ in 2015 to reach this significant milestone, with sales exceeding 15,000 albums. This is an incredible feat in this new age of music. The last NZ rock band to achieve a Platinum album was Shihad in 2013 with their album Kiljoy which took 18 years from release to hit the milestone.

Devilskin comment “It’s been an insane 8 months for us since we released We Rise and the craziness continues! We are all very proud of our accomplishments and especially proud of our amazing fans and supporters, because without them we would not be doing any of this. We truly feel privileged to be where we are today and to have the honour of a Platinum album is especially cool. Thank you so much to everyone that has been part of this ride!”

We Rise released on July 11, 2014 and went straight to the top of the charts remaining as the #1 Album and #1 Kiwi Artist Album for 3 weeks and achieving gold sales after only 2 weeks. After 34 weeks, We Rise remains in the top 30.

After a sell-out 20 date NZ album release tour and their headline Surrender Summer Tour in 2014 Devilskin will be taking their mesmerizing rock show to international audiences this year. They will headline 4 international show case gigs next month; the famous Borderline club in Soho London on April 15th, the International Rock Summit in Los Angeles on the 24th and 25thApril as well as the world famous Whisky a Go Go on Sunset Strip West Hollywood on 29th April.

Devilskin have also received international acclaim alongside Start a Revolution music director Dimi Nakov have been nominated for 17 film festival awards in the music video category. Recently winning “The Rising Star Award” at the Canada Film Festival for Best Music Video directed by Dimi Nakov.

James Southgate from Music Management says “Devilskin have acknowledged their amazing fan base, I would like to pay my respect to Paul, Nail, Jennie and Nic for the enormous effort and commitment they have injected into the entire project; the music, the performances, the signing sessions, the photo opps the time to talk to anyone who asks. For certain members this represents a culmination of 30 years of hard work and it is only right they be recognised with Platinum album sales – the only NZ rock band to have that honour in many many years is truly well deserved.”

image004 1On April 17, Shihad will release the 20th Anniversary reissue of KILLJOY. The album will

be available on remastered Deluxe Vinyl LP, CD and digital formats and includes

bonus track ‘N.I.L’.

Listening to KILLJOY is like getting a big, beautiful punch in the face. It’ll give you two

black eyes but leave you smiling. It’s that good. And now that Shihad’s classic

second album is turning 20, it’s fitting it gets the re-mastered and reissue treatment to

make it sound bigger and more imposing than ever. KILLJOY is volatile, catchy, and

intense all in one.

This storm of sonic power isn’t just one of New Zealand’s finest rock albums – it’s one of

the country’s best albums full stop.

If 1993 debut, CHURN, was the sound of Shihad’s roots, then KILLJOY was the

blueprint for the band’s trademark mix of melodic heaviness, pounding rhythms, and

catchy songs that get people singing and chanting along.

Released in May 1995, KILLJOY peaked at No.4 on the album charts and went on to

gain platinum status and win album of the year at the New Zealand Music Awards in

The album’s four singles – ‘You Again’, ‘Bitter’, ‘Gimme Gimme’ and ‘Deb’s Night

Out’ – are among the band’s most enduring tracks. Few songs have the chest

beating intensity and unbridled power of album opener, ‘You Again’, with its

punishing massacre of first up riffs through to its unhinged and fractured ending. And

the simmering, dark beauty of ‘Deb’s Night Out’ – the band’s ode to bizarre and

brutal Palmerston North band Skeptics – remains one of Shihad’s finest moments.

While CHURN received some overseas recognition, it was KILLJOY that truly launched

Shihad onto the international stage when they hit the road with Faith No More on a

38-date tour through Europe. It also led to the band’s first tour of the US where they

played everything from club dates in Los Angeles and New York through to

influential heavy metal convention Foundations Forum alongside Motorhead and

Monster Magnet.

The 20th birthday reissue of KILLJOY – available on re-mastered Deluxe Vinyl LP, CD,

and Digital formats and includes bonus track ‘N.I.L’ – is testament to what a

complete album it is from start to finish. Take your pick from the fiery spite of Bitter,

the brooding and thunderous ‘For What You Burn’, or the raw slugging ferocity of

The thing about KILLJOY is that it sounded exotic, heavy and ahead of it’s time back

in 1995, and now two decades on it sounds even better.

Van Halen reinvented the sound of hard rock in 1978 with its influential and wildly successful

eponymous debut album and then achieved even greater success six years later with 1984. Both

albums would define a generation while selling more than 10 million copies each in the U.S.

alone to earn diamond-certification from the RIAA. The band recently went back to the original

analog tapes and remastered both of these landmark albums – VAN HALEN and 1984 – which

all time and scorching concert staples like ‘Runnin’ With The Devil,’ ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,’

Halen’s finger-tapping tour de force, ‘Eruption.’ Six years and five albums later, Van Halen had

become one of the biggest bands in world around the release of 1984, which includes a number

of the band’s most legendary songs such as the #1 hit, ‘Jump,’ ‘Panama,’ and ‘Hot For Teacher.’

Mastering engineer Chris Bellman, who remastered the original albums for Bernie Grundman

Studios, Hollywood, CA, was enlisted for these new versions. In order to produce the original

sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the quarter-inch tapes for CD; for 180-gram

vinyl; and for the digital version. Newly mastered versions of Diver Down, Women and Children
